Electrotherapy
Targeted use of TENS, IFT, ultrasound and short-wave modalities to manage pain and aid healing.
What this treatment is, and how it works
Electrotherapy uses controlled electrical, sound or thermal energy to modulate pain, reduce inflammation, relax spasm and support tissue healing. We use it as an adjunct, not a stand-alone treatment.
Common modalities at the clinic include TENS and Interferential Therapy (IFT) for pain, therapeutic ultrasound for soft-tissue healing, and short-wave or microwave diathermy for deeper warmth.
Conditions it commonly addresses
- Acute and sub-acute musculoskeletal pain
- Muscle spasm around the neck, shoulder or low back
- Tendon and ligament soft-tissue injuries
- Post-fracture stiffness once cleared by your orthopaedic surgeon
- Joint pain associated with arthritis flares
- Bell's palsy and selected nerve-related conditions
What we do, step by step
- Indication CheckWe confirm electrotherapy is appropriate for your condition and rule out contraindications.
- Modality SelectionChoosing TENS, IFT, ultrasound or diathermy based on tissue depth and goal.
- DosageFrequency, intensity and duration are set for your tolerance and the stage of your injury.
- Combined TreatmentElectrotherapy is paired with manual therapy and exercise — never used in isolation.
- ReassessmentEffects are reviewed each session; the modality is changed or stopped if benefit plateaus.
In a session
Most modalities feel like a gentle tingling, mild warmth, or nothing at all. A single application takes 8–15 minutes. You should never feel pain during electrotherapy.
Recommended sessions
Typically used over 3–8 sessions alongside exercise. Long-term, daily electrotherapy without progress is not encouraged.
Who should avoid this
Cardiac pacemakers, pregnancy (over the abdomen and low back), active malignancy in the area, broken or infected skin, and metal implants for some modalities. Your physiotherapist will assess suitability.
What you can expect from our team
- Used as an adjunct to active treatment, not a passive habit
- Multiple modalities available so we choose what fits, not what is convenient
- Clear stop-criteria — we will tell you when you no longer need it
